Basic GA implementation checklist

The options for using Google Analytics on your website/app are practically limitless. Below is a very basic list of things we might typically look out for in the implementation phase. Some of these are more suitable for specific types of websites but we thought it was a reasonable starting point. Feel free to use this as a checklist/mini audit for your own website!

  • Planned out now many properties are needed (esp for multi-domain setups)
  • Created at least 3 views per property (main, backup, testing)
  • Set the basic property and view settings (currency, benchmarking, exclude bots)
  • Set up site search
  • Linked to other Google products (esp AdWords, Google Search Console)
  • Performed audit to make sure personally identifiable information isn’t accidentally collected
  • Created filters to exclude internal traffic
  • Created filters to exclude referral spam
  • Created filters to only include traffic to the whitelisted website hostname(s)
  • Created filters to append hostname to the page URL (for multi-domain setups)
  • Configured goals, goal values and ecommerce settings (if appropriate)
  • Modified default channel grouping to be more relevant to your website
  • Created content groupings to be more relevant to your website
  • Set up process for correctly campaign-tagging email marketing
  • Set up process for correctly campaign-tagging paid social media marketing
  • Set up process for correctly campaign-tagging other marketing
  • Set up process for importing non-Google cost data
  • Set up process for importing other custom data
