Meta to stop paying news publishers in Australia

Meta has been all over the news with its decision to not renew deals with Australian media. These deals were struck up a few years ago in response to a change in legislation (and after Facebook banned links to news websites in Australia for about a week).

“To ensure that we continue to invest in products and services that drive user engagement, we will not enter into new commercial deals for traditional news content in these countries and will not offer new Facebook products specifically for news publishers in the future,” the company said.

The Australian government is looking at all options to try force Facebook to keep news articles in the feed while paying for them but there’s a real possibility that this will lead to a permanent ban, alongside the expected false positives of many non-news websites being incorrectly flagged by Facebook.

While we don’t recommend any action for now it may be worth checking on your general digital marketing strategy especially if organic Facebook reach is a significant part of it.
